If I were to tell you that a West Coast distance runner who lives near Los Angeles had nearly broken 14 minutes for 5,000 meters last month, you likely would have thought I was lying or talking about the Newbury Park boys.
However, there was an LA-based high schooler who did run 14:02 back in February who wasn't a Panther.
His name is Conor Gibson.
The California native from West Torrance High School has proven to be a solid distance runner during his time at the prep level. He has run 9:06 for 3,200m, placed seventh at the Woodbridge XC Classic and was a runner-up at the CIF Division 3 State Cross Country Championships.
But Gibson has been recently garnering attention for reasons other than his performances on the track and the grass.
That's because he signed with UCLA earlier this week, a school less than 30 minutes from his hometown.
