FHSAA Class 3A Third-Place Boys Finish

2 national individual championships by Leonard Mustari

Guy Thomas died in July after facing complications from COVID-19.

It was a tragic end for a coach who was beginning to build a powerhouse at Fort Myers Dunbar.

But in his final year, he led his athletes to their best showings in program history, with a third-place finish at the FHSAA Class 3A Track and Field Championships in May.

This past February, he also led his star hurdler, Leonard Mustari -- as well as Lucheyona Weaver -- to individual championships at adidas Indoor Nationals. Mustari put together his best moments on the national stage, winning a 60mH title in 7.71. He also claimed a national win in the long jump with a mark of 7.46 meters.

Outdoors, Mustari also grabbed state championships in both the 110mH and 300mH and then went on to finish second at Brooks PR in the 110mH. After Thomas died in July, Mustari ran one last time, winning a 110mH title at the USATF Junior Olympics.

Thomas had been at Dunbar for over five years and was steadily developing his athletes at the grassroots level. In 2019, Dunbar's own track was resurfaced, going from asphalt to a synthetic rubber.

Both Mustari and Weaver signed with North Carolina A&T University over the National Letter of Intent period. They were two of Thomas' greatest successes.
