Sadie Engelhardt's eyes were set this season on breaking the 14-year-old age group world record in the mile, which was set by Mary Decker in 1973.
The Californian, who turns 15-years-old at the end of August, lined up in the girls championship race and was the only eighth-grader in the field. Engelhardt hung on tight with the leaders and put in a major kick the last 400m.
As she came down the home stretch she made an extra push to come across the finish line in second. Most importantly, the FAT clock stopped at 4:40.16 and that mark officially broke Decker's hand-timed 4:40.1 record from nearly five decades ago.
Englehardt shaved four seconds from a week ago when she competed at the Music City Track Carnival in 4:44.40.
Addy Wiley of Huntington North (IN) won the event in a new US No. 1 mile time of 4:38.14 and Allison Johnson of Mount Gilead (OH) finished closely in third in 4:41.29.
