When the pandemic hit the United States in March of 2020, life changed in a significant way. With most competitive high school track and field opportunities becoming scarce or axed entirely.
This, however, opened a door for new breakout stars who took advantage of the summer track and field meets that were scattered throughout the nation.
We saw numerous breakout stars last summer, including many names from the Class of 2022.
Then-sophomore Rheinhardt Harrison, for instance, instantly became the best sophomore miler in high school history by running 4:01. Sixteen-year-old Erriyon Knighton ran two personal bests during the summer months, which eventually led to him securing a professional contract with Adidas.
