Matthew Boling ran 9.98 seconds for 100 meters on Saturday at his Region 6A-3 meet in Webster, Texas, doing so on a wind reading of 4.2 meters/second, which would make the attempt outside legal requirements.
Which means: This won't be a current No. 2 world time, or a new U20 world lead. Diving deeper, the effort also converts down to 10.16 seconds on a 0.0 wind and 10.07 on a 2.0 plus-wind.
But still. Sub-10 is sub-10.
Take 4-time Olympic medalist Ato Boldon's advice:
There is one huge sticking point, though: Boling's time is now the fastest all conditions mark ever recorded for a high school athlete at the distance.
He became the first prep athlete since Gibbs (FL) graduate Trayvon Bromell in 2013 to run under that history-making mark. Bromell ran 9.99 seconds at the Great Southwest Classic on a plus-4.0 wind.

The national high school record at 100 meters, which stands at 10.00 seconds flat, was last achieved by Trentavis Friday in 2014 at the USA Junior Track and Field Championships.
Boling's state championships in Texas will arrive on May 10-11 in Austin, then potential national-level meets remain. At this juncture, Boling is competing on a level in which he could potentially step foot against professionals or collegiate athletes at the USA Senior Track and Field Championships in June.
