The Scoop: New York Performances, CARIFTA, Plus Sydney's 5K

Sydney Masciarelli Tunes Up With Major 5K

- - -

There's a guy like Matthew Boling, whose legend is front-facing

And then there's Foot Locker Nationals champ Sydney Masciarelli, who largely performs under the radar.

Both stories are unique in their own ways.

Masciarelli, a high school sophomore who is also a very good basketball player, competes for Marianapolis Prepatory School, which is a small private school in Connecticut that competes within its own athletic association.

On Saturday, she ran a US No. 2 5K in 16:30 at the Eric Loeschner Memorial Invitational. Her brother, Salvatore, paced her and finished in 16:27.

Masciarelli doesn't often get chances to race against the state's top public athletes, and she rarely gets competition outside of the training she faces with her brother throughout the season. But following a breakout race last year at New Balance Nationals Outdoor in the 1-mile -- she went 4:56 -- Masciarelli will test herself yet again against national competition this postseason.

Stay tuned for more on the high school sophomore.
