1. The Epic 60 Meter Final At UK ... With Pride On The Line

- - -

Very little separated one athlete from next in the 60 meter final on Saturday in Lexington at the UK High School Invitational.

And in reality, the mere hundredths of a second one athlete may have put on another heading into the championship wasn't what mattered most anyway.

It was pride.

Between Lance Lang, Langston Jackson, Marcellus Moore, Chris Duffy, Kennedy Lightner, Justin Robinson, Jordan Clark and Cameron Miller, someone had to win.

  • Lang had once owned the nation's No. 1 60m time. He wanted it back.
  • Moore had dominated the distance for stretches, but he had yet to run under 6.7.
  • Jackson was on the cusp of becoming the nation's top 60m athlete. He wanted to prove it.
  • Lightner and Duffy and Clark were looking to make statements.
  • Robinson was known for excellence in other events. He wanted to stamp his name as a threat at any distance.

And at the end of the race, almost everyone came away with some type of comfort.

But it was Lang, in his first indoor season, who once again struck gold, nailing a US No. 1 time of 6.62 seconds to win over Moore, who finally broke the threshold and was second in 6.65. Jackson was two hundredths of his career best time. Robinson was fourth in 6.79 seconds and entrenched himself as arguably the top sprinter in the country at any distance -- he was US top 5 at the 60m, 200m, 400m.
