MileSplit50 Girls Team Rankings Countdown

5.

Analysis: The Hornets will have the most ground to make up in replacing depth from a year ago, but they have the right pieces that can make it happen. The 11-time winners of NXN and perennial state contenders in New York are the top ranked team in their state and likely will prove themselves throughout the 2018 season. In fact, this year could be the most rewarding season to date for FM.

Before the season we posed a few questions to FM head coach Bill Aris. His answers are below.

As a coach, what principles do you lean on and instill when guiding a new Fayetteville-Manlius team each season? Why are these principles for the team to follow?

Every year, regardless of the teams we've had previously, it's a brand new year for us. I don't call on our legacies of the past to reinforce and build on current teams. That's consistent every single year I coach. It's not 'We did this, so we have to do it again.' It doesn't matter. Even with the same kids. I don't look back on the past year. I learn from the past, live in the present, and work toward the future. That's how we've tried to do it. Another key aspect is selflessness. I don't want to get too romantic. Selfishness works well if you're an individual. But if you're on an operation working toward team success, then selfishness is destructive. . We operate on the premise of the overall good, contribute to the overall good of the team instead of thinking solely of yourself. Everything we've done is as a whole and we're greater than the sum of our parts.

Another quote we try to live by is 'The Process' is the goal. It's one that rings true with us. We don't operate other than thinking one day at a time is our process. We're not a goal oriented team, we're a process oriented team. While goals are there, we don't dwell on them. We work on our process every single day. That's how I have approached the seasons and those are the calling cards of our program, for better of worse.

Where is your favorite place to take your team to train over the season and why?

That would be Green Lake State Park. It's 10 minutes from our high school. The reason for that is that it's just a variety of things. We're not the only team that trains there. We are there. We basically spend our whole summer there. We're there in the fall a few times a week and in the late, more than a few times. We're there in the early fall, because we can't get there every day. There's a diversity of trails. There are a variety of very hilly, moderately hilly to very hilly terrains. There are soft surfaces, beautiful scenes and a whole network of trails which suit our purposes for cross country. First and foremost, that's our favorite training venue.
