We often look for signs when records go down. 

In the case of Bishop Shanahan (PA) High senior and University of Oregon signee Josh Hoey, he showed us plenty before he set the high school national record in the 800m on Sunday, running 1:47.67 in a men's field at Boston University's Last Chance Invitational. He surpassed Robby Andrews' former record of 1:49.21, set in 2009 in New York. The time also dipped under the former American U20 record of 1:47.84, held by John Marshall in 1982. 

But Hoey has been known more as a miler throughout his career, with that perception perhaps beginning when he won The Penn Relays Carnival mile in 2016 in 4:11.90 -- and, to be fair, that career trajectory has continued after a win at this season's vaunted NYRR Millrose Games mile, where he won in 4:07.42.

Still, the signs have been pointing to Hoey's tremendous progression in the 800m over the last three years. Starting in 2016 as a sophomor...
