The Scoop: Upsets, Star Freshmen And The Beginning Of Indoor Championships

Here Come The Indoor Championships

In some ways, this weekend was the beginning of the indoor championship season.

With the outdoor season looming for many warm-weather states nationally, North Carolina held its all classes indoor championships at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.

And while we won't get into all the athletes who won -- you can find those links below -- we'll point out a few familiar names on the national scene.

Mount Tabor (NC) High senior Cameron Ponder, a Furman University signee, was impressive as he doubled in Class 3A with individual wins in the 1000m (2:33.55) and the 1600m (4:16.06).

Then there was the Green Hope boys team, a qualifier at Nike Cross Nationals this past fall, who dominated in distance events in Class 4A, earning a win in the 1000m from Ian Delgado (2:30.97), in the 1600m with Finn McBride (4:20.09) and in the 3200m from Peyton Barish (9:30.98). Green Hope also scooped up victories in the 4x400 and 4x800.

Fun fact: Ponder and Delgado can also throw a solid 'oop (below)

Here's a name we've heard frequently this indoor season, too. Wakefield's Veronica Frailey, who's been near the top of the North Carolina leaderboard and held a US No. 3 mark in the shot put, scored her first title at the event with a mark of 47 feet, 1 inch.

In ensuing weeks, Group Championships kickstart in New Jersey, while state series begin in Maryland, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee and Pennsylvania to finish out the month.
