What to Watch: Indoor Track Meets 2/28

PFTCA Indoor State Championship (PA)

John Lewis (413) and Sam Ritz (850) will have a rematch after their epic Marine Corps Classic 800m dual in December. Who will come out on top - 400m specialist Lewis or distance standout Ritz?

  • Boys 800m - Track fans will be treated to a rematch of the Marine Corps Classic half mile in which Sam Ritz outraced John Lewis, 1:52.81 to 1:52.88. The marks were the top two times in the nation through early January and still stand as US #3 and US #5, respectively. Lewis is bypassing defense of his 400m state title for this race. If either star falters, expect US #7 1:53.13 runner Elias Graca to roll.
  • Girls One Mile - The big news is that defending state champion Brianna Schwartz is out with an IT band issue. Minus one big star, there will be plenty of competition between US #3 4:50.73 Marissa Sheva, who won the Bishop Loughlin Games back in December, and US #4 4:51.02 Olivia Sargent, who nearly stole at Millrose Games with a fast-closing kick for runner-up honors.
  • Boys One Mile - The boys race won't be quite as competitive as the ladies, but Sam Ritz's US #7 4:10.5 Mile credentials this year make this one worth watching. The Columbia recruit was sixth at the Millrose Games and fifth at New Balance Grand Prix.

Sarah Walker was a surprise winner in the 600m at the Armory Track Invitational, outleaning Cardozo star Emma Gallagher at the line. She's shown no problems racing to top solo times, can she crack 2:10 for 800m?

  • Girls 800m - Sophomore star Sarah Walker ran a solo 2:10.52 to win the Yale Track Classic back in January to set the then-US #1 mark. Can she break 2:10 or even nab another nation-leader? Walker's sole 800m run this season still ranks US #5. She's certainly got the wheels - her 1:32.3 600m win at the Armory Track Invitational still ranks US #4.
  • Girls 3k - Pennsylvania boasts three solo sub-10 minute 3k runners this year, all of whom are ranked in the top five nationally for the event. Madeleine Davison (US #2 9:54.14) will take on Olivia Sargent (US #4 9:59.22) and Mady Clahane (US #5 9:59.4). Sargent will double back from the mile.
  • Girls 60m/200m - The short sprints are all about the showdown between Chanel Brissett (US #7 24.46 200m, US #15 7.55 60m) vs. Taylor Chapman (US #10 24.49 200m, US #18 7.56 60m), who will each be looking for points for the team title.
  • Girls 60H - Can Ciara Leonard, US #1 and PA State Record Holder at 8.47 seconds, capture her first indoor state title over defending champion Sierra Brabham-Lawrence?
