What to Watch: Indoor Track Meets 2/28

MITS State Finals (MI)

The state of Michigan doesn't have an official indoor track season, but the Michigan Indoor Track Series (MITS) State Finals will host one of the nation's most loaded fields this weekend.

Grant Fisher led Logan Wetzel and Donavan Brazier to the nation's top times in the mile earlier this season at the Gazelle Sports Elite Meet.

  • Boys 1,600m - How fast can Grant Fisher go? The US #1 miler has raced 4:06.72 this season, but New Balance Indoor Grand Prix Junior Men's Mile champion Logan Wetzel will be nipping at his heels. Wetzel, ranked US #2 4:08.75, is the state's top ranked half-miler but skipping that race to focus on what could be one of the fastest prep showdowns in indoor state history.
  • Girls 3,200m - Homeschool extraordinaire Sarah Kettel took down multi-time All-American Audrey Belf last weekend in a big upset as the ladies ran to top national times of US #1 10:28.82 and US #3 10:31.11 for 3,200m. Belf was battling illness during the entire week before, so hopefully she is back at full strength and can work with Kettel to get under 10:20.
  • Boys 800m - Defending New Balance Outdoor Nationals 800m champion Donavan Brazier (a 1:48 guy!) has to be considered the favorite, even though he's run "only" 1:55 this season. The Texas A&M commit will have his hands full versus Cameron Cooper (US #10 1:53.66) and Drake Gauthier (US #11 1:53.8). Logan Wetzel is another 1:53 talent this winter, but he is focusing on the 1,600m.

Ersula Farrow set her US #1 time of 2:09.21 in the 800m in winning the University of Kentucky High School Indoor Invitational last weekend. She is one of four girls to break 2:10 this year.

  • Girls 800m - All eyes will be on US #1 800m star Ersula Farrow, who has made it no secret that she is going after the Michigan State Record of 2:08.77, set by future Olympian and two-time NCAA 800m Champion Geena Gall. Farrow's nation-leading time is 2:09.21.
  • Boys 200m - US #1 Jaron Flournoy has turned heads all season with top performances for the Michigan All-Stars Track Club. Can he lower his nation-leading time of 21.16 on a flat track? The senior is also ranked in US #2 47.35 400m and US #4 6.78 60m but could choose just one individual event.
  • Girls 400m - Anna Jefferson of Oak Park held the US #1 spot early in the season, but fell back to her current position of US #15 with her 55.99 win at the SPIRE Scholastic Open. To break into the national top ten, she must break 55.5 seconds in the quarter.
