What to Watch: Indoor Track Meets 1/24

New Balance Games (NY)

Can Rai Benjamin (Mount Vernon, NY) take down Michael Cherry's seemingly invincible 33.04 300m National Record at the New York Armory, indoor track's most dramatic stage?

This invitation-only event could very well feature the best results of the entire weekend. Starting the with the Girls 300m Dash Invitational, each race features an all-star lineup straight from the national leaderboards.

In that race, Brandee' Johnson, a World Youth Olympics bronze medalist in the 200m, will meet Taft's Ariel Strunkey (US #4 39.14 300m) as well as Cardozo duo D'Jai Baker (US #5 55.67 400m) and freshman phenom Paris Peoples (US #8 56.42 400m).

The Boys 300m Dash Invitational is stacked just as high, with US #1 33.81 runner Rai Benjamin (Mount Vernon, NY) leading the charge. US #7 34.63 Izaiah Brown (Amsterdam, NY) and Benjamin's teammate, US #10 34.71 Cody Housen, will be right behind. Can anyone break the national record of 33.04?

Defending Millrose Games Mile champion Luke Gavigan (Tappan Zee) headlines the Invitational Mile. The nation's fastest returner with a 4:08 mile last year turned in an incredible anchor leg on the Tappan Zee DMR last weekend at the Yale Track Classic to finish US #11 10:34.79. He currently ranks US #43 4:23.94, but expect that time to drop considerably. James Asselmeyer, US #2 2:27.6 1k, won't make it easy.

Marin Warner (Holmdel, NJ) enters the Girls Mile Run Invitational as the favorite, given her 4:49 1,600m and 10:41 3,200m credentials. She has run 5:05.37 for 1,600m this year. Sophomore Jessica Lawson (Corning, NY), runner-up at the New York State XC Championship, is entered as the top seed; she has run 4:52.50 for 1,500m this year. Epiphany Grisbaum (Ocean City, MD), runner-up in the Mile at the Marine Corps Holiday Classic, could also challenge for the lead.

Can anyone break through 12 minutes and take down Suffern's brand-new US #1 in the Girls DMR? The New York squad ran 12:01.10 at the Armory Frosh/Novice Meet on Wednesday night. Three teams ranked in the US top ten will make this a fight worth following, as US #3 12:10.16 Shenendehowa, US #4 12:12.36 Bronxville, US #7 12:20.61 Mamaroneck and US #10 12:23.30 Lakeland are all on the start list.

US #7 51-7.25 performer Monae Cooper (New Rochelle, NY) headlines the Girls Invitational Weight Throw, while the Boys event features three of the top ten U.S. performers. US #1 Adam Kelly (Barrington) has thrown an incredible 83-footer this season, while US #7 Mike Alvernaz (Barrington) and US #8 Eric Sheng (Syosset) has thrown 68-8 and 68-7.5, respectively.
