Western Branch (VA) High junior Shadajah Ballard is still searching for her breakout race of her junior season, but all signs point to her being close.
She cut 0.60 seconds off her best in the 55mH from her freshman to sophomore seasons and still has a lot of racing left. Next up is the VHSL Group 6A indoor state championships, a venue in which Ballard hit a PR as a freshman.
But Ballard also has national competition left at New Balance Nationals Indoor and will likely see US No. 1 Masai Russell of Bullis (MD) School sometime down the road.
Competition for a national title will be fierce, though, considering elite racing has been done at the 60mH.
Michigan's Grace Stark, also a junior, leads the nation with a time at 8.25 seconds, while Rock Canyon (CO) High senior Emily Sloan isn't far behind in 8.33 seconds.
