The Scoop: Kelsey Chmiel Is In Prime Form Right Now

The Jimmy Driscoll Offered Top Times

- - -

A battle for the nation's top time came down to the wire at the Jimmy Driscoll Invitational at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise, Idaho, on Saturday.

Borah (ID) High School's Nathan Green nipped Bishop Kelly's Nick Russell at the line for a staggeringly close finish.

Green won in 15:16.20, while Russell, who was 16th at NXN last year, was second in 15:16.30. The time's represent the No. 1 and No. 2 times in the country thus far.

What's interesting to note, beyond this early season result, is just how good this matchup really was. Based on performances from last season, we can see that Green may have been injured or chose not to run cross country last season. However, over the spring he went 1:58.08 800m, won an outdoor Class 5A state title in the 1600m (4:22.18) and was second in the 3200m (9:20.11)--going up against Stetson Moss, who's one of Idaho's best distance runners. He also ran a 4:15 full mile at the Portland Track Festival.

Russell was in a different division in Idaho (4A), though his times stack up similarly to Green's, and Moss's. That trio will be special this fall.
