The Scoop: Marion Humphrey Triples In Alabama At State

And Other Things That Happened At The State Championships In Florida

OK, so some very big things took place in Jacksonville, Florida, in the Sunshine State's state championships, like one of the very best 100 meter all condition marks of all time, and the third fastest girls 200m of all-time. But other cool stuff happened, too (based on our results, we tallied over 1,100 elite-level performances from the championships)!

1. Markalah Hart, the sophomore hurdling sensation from Miami Northwestern -- which, by the way, won another state title on the girls side -- won the 100mH in an easy 13.85 (+1.3) and the 300mH in 42.89, giving her a second straight double after achieving the same feat in 2017 as a freshman. We all may have left the Florida state championships talking about Tamari Davis and Briana Williams, but Hart is right there in the conversation.

2. American Heritage's boys 4x100. Anthony Schwartz obviously took state title crowns in the 100m and 200m, finding redemption after an injury knocked him out of the races last year, but his team came up with a big performance in the 4x100 as well. The squad ran its fastest time of the year to bury the Class 2A competition, winning in 40.14 seconds.

3. Jan'Taijah Ford, after racing out with an incredible 52-point effort in the 400m in February, solidified that early promise with her second straight title at the distance, running her second-fastest time of the year in 53.19 seconds. She had posted an effort of 52.82 seconds at the Louie Bing Classic in February.

4. Jamal Walton did not win a state title in the 200m or 400 runs. Perhaps Walton ran into an unfortunate pull, or simply didn't have his best race. It happens. Anthony Schwartz knows that pain -- it happened to him last season. But oddly enough, one athlete's tough day gives a break to another hoping to make history. And that happened with Piper senior DaeQwan Butler, who won the Class 4A 400m in 46.55 to Walton's 47.10. And in the 200m, Christopher Columbus' Tyler Harrell took the 200m in a wind-legal 20.83 (+1.2). Harrell and Morgan Jamison, of Martin County, both went under 21 seconds to finish 1-2.

5. In an interesting move, Miami Northwestern's Thomas Burns, a University of Miami signee who will likely feature in the 400mH in college, did not race in the 300mH at states -- but he did have a busy day. Instead, he posted his first win at the open 400m in 46.72 seconds. He also finished second in the 110mH in 14.02 (+2.4) seconds, trailing just behind Northeast's Wavell Hinds, who won in 13.90. Burns also helped the Bulls earn a win in the 4x400 in 3:14.49 and second in the 4x800 in 7:50.01.
