Great Southwest Classic Preview

GIRLS DISTANCE

Fresh off her 4:40 full mile PR performance at the Prefontaine Classic, Billings (MT) junior Christina Aragon is back at the Great Southwest Classic to go for another win, but this time in the 800 meter after a 4:56 1600 win in 2014. Aragon has a PR of 2:11 in the event from her Montana State Meet last month, but could challenge for her first sub 2:10 performance this weekend.

Aragon will be challenged by Tabor Scholl from Colorado, who has also run 2:11 this spring while competing unattached from her high school. Scholl was the Simplot Games 1600 meter champion indoors and 4:28 in the 1500 at the Payton Jordan Invite, which Aragon ran US #5 all-time 4:16 in the same meet for the 1500.

Amanda Dillon, an Arkansas state champ with a 2:12 PR from Har-Ber is also one to watch in the 800 along with freshmen Madison Mooney from Colorado. Mooney is one of 3 girls from Colorado in the meet who have run 2:12 or faster this spring with herself, Scholl, and Riley Cooney.

Entered in the 800, but the leading entrant in the mile is two-time adidas Dream mile qualifier Lucy Biles from Utah. In a tune-up meet for her before she heads to New York City next weekend to race at the adidas Grand Prix, Biles is one of three girls entered with times under minutes as the UNC recruit boasts a PR of 4:50 in the full mile.

Megan Mooney makes a comeback from injury and enters the mile with a personal best of 4:58 from last year. Syracuse (UT) senior Isabella Williams ran 4:57 at the Arcadia Invite last spring and is looking to run under 5 minutes for the first time this season as she comes in with a 5:03 season best time in the 1600.

Canyon Del Oro's Bridgett Doucett appears that she will not have much competition to push her in the girls 3200 meter run to improve upon her 10:30 PR performance at the Arizona State Meet in early May with a 47 second difference on seed times between her and the second ranked runner. However, several girls in the field have been knocking on the door of sub 11 and could give her some company through at least the first mile of the race.
