Great Southwest Classic Preview

BOYS DISTANCE

Colorado state record holder Blake Yount of Smokey High School will be at the Southwest Classic to see if he can reaffirm his national ranking after several runners recently on national level this past week or two have posted 1:50 performances around his US #4 1:50.59 state record breaking time from last month.

Young will probably need to set a fast pace for himself as he has 3 seconds on the next fastest entrant in Texas 6A state runner-up Bryce Hoppel (1:53.26).

Oklahoma state champ Bryce Balenseifen is doing some serious traveling in the post-season. He traveled to Orlando, Florida a few weeks ago to finish third in the Golden South Classic mile with a new PR time of 4:11.

He will have some tough competition in the mile from Utah state champion Josh Collins and Utah state runner-up McKay Johns. American Fork's Johns is only a sophomore, but ran 4:12 for 1600 meters at altitude. Collins defeated Conner Mantz for the second time this year at Utah state championships in the 1600 meter after beating the US Cross Country junior champ as well in the fall in cross country.

Johns' sophomore teammate Casey Clinger will be one of the favorites in the boys 3200 meter meter run having won Utah state titles last month in both the 1600 and 3200. Clinger was an 8th place finish at the Nike Cross Nationals in the fall.
