Georgia's Ryan Clark, Candace Hill Sweep Pre Classic 200m

Boys 200m - Ryan Clark is class of field in 20.77

Ryan Clark of Banneker, Ga. had a target on his back as the U.S. No. 1 ranked 100m and U.S. No. 2 ranked 200m sprinter on the year. The Florida-bound senior did not have a great start, as the quickest out of the blocks was actually Rai Benjamin of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., whose main events are the 400m and 400m hurdles. But Clark easily made up the ground and headed into the home straight with a two-meter lead.

Corey Dauphine of Port Arthur Memorial, Texas made a strong surge from lane six, but it was too little too late as Clark cruised to the win, 20.77 to 21.18. The time is the third-fastest in the nation this year; Clark already ranks U.S. No. 2 with his 20.71.

Quick Takes:

  • What is Ryan Clark's best event? He ranks US #1 in the 100m (10.26) and US #2 at the 200m (20.71). He hasn't raced a 400m this year, but his PR is 46.33.
  • Texas is stacked. Dauphine was second in this race and just second in his own state meet two weeks ago. Fellow Texan Obi Igbokwe was also a state runner-up two weeks ago, but in his main event - the 400m. Third place at Pre, Igbokwe has only raced the 200m twice - once in February and once in March.
