Rai Benjamin's IAAF World Relays Blog

When we arrived for check in, I was shocked to see Tyson Gay standing right next to me. Growing up, I would watch these guys on TV and I wouldn't think that a few years later, I'll be competing alongside them. I then saw Ryan Bailey, Gatlin, Wallace, Lashawn Meritt, the whole crew and more. At first it was a little exciting, but after seeing them for consecutive days, it became normal because at the end of the day, they are regular people.

The next day, which was Friday, we would head to the practice track to work handoffs and get sharp. Although it was raining, we got the job done and left soon after to get back to the hotel. While on our way back to our rooms, there was a big commotion and that's when I realized what was going on - it was Usain. Media and police surrounded him while he walked to the IAAF press conference. It was weird seeing someone who you only saw on TV, it was a bit surreal but motivating.

I then quickly realized this wasn't high school and these guys meant business, especially since World Championships are months away. As Saturday came, the mood switched and everyone was ready to compete. Although I wasn't running, I was still in competition mode, spikes and uniform in hand just in case I was needed. That night we made it back to the B final and placed fifth, breaking the national record for the third time. After having dinner later that night and talking to some other athletes, we went to bed prepared and ready for the next day ahead.
