What to Watch: 81st Eastern States Championship

Sprints

Nation-leading 300m runners Rai Benjamin (1980) and Taylor McLaughlin (2074) will drop down in distance to race the 200m.

  • Girls 55m - New York sprint queen Brenessa Thompson of Medgar Evers will be eager to reclaim her US #1 in the event, as she is currently tied for US #4 at 6.95. The Meet Record is a blazing 6.50, courtesy of Michelle Glover (Willingboro) in 1980. It's too bad that Imani Solan chose the 200m over the shorter distance - the Suffern, NY star clocked a hand-timed (unofficial) 6.94 this year.
  • Girls 200m - Solan, who clocked a hand-timed 24.64 (US #19) in January, will face Quashira McIntosh (US #9 38.89 300m), Cardozo relay stalwart D'Jai Baker (US #7 38.61 300m) and Paris Peoples (US #21 56.42 400m). These ladies are quick but Whitney Fountain's 23.77 Meet Record ain't goin' anywhere.
  • Boys 200m - This race is fire! Three of the top ten 300m runners in the nation will face off for one lap: Rai Benjamin (US #1 33.17 300m) vs. Taylor McLaughlin (US #4 33.62) vs. Anton Porter (US #10 34.27). Of the trio, Porter has raced the fastest 200m this year at US #11 21.73. The race is a rematch of sorts between McLaughlin and Benjamin, as McLaughlin beat out Benjamin last year for runner-up honors in the 400m.
  • Boys 400m - The quarter is just as stacked at the 200m. McLaughlin (US #10 48.33) returns to race defending national champion Richard Rose (US #14 48.66). The New Jersey star will have to get out hard to stump Rose, who is the nation-leader for 600m at 1:18.40.
  • Sydney McLaughlin - Girl gets her own bullet point. The US #1 in the 55H (7.80) and 400m (53.72) will race both events in addition to competing in the long jump (More on that in FIELD). Expect Zola Golden's 400m standard of 54.40 to fall.

Sydney McLaughlin is going for a triple crown in the 55-meter hurdles, 400m and long jump.
