Briana Williams is fast closing in on Candace Hill, and quickly moving up the Jamaican ranks. The Oakland Park Northeast (FL) High School junior pocketed the No. 2 all-time high school effort and a new Jamaican U20 record at 100 meters on Saturday, going a wind-legal 11.02 (+0.8) seconds at The Great Southwest Classic. This came directly off a performance last weekend in Jacksonville, where Williams ran a wind-legal 11.10 seconds against top-level competition. She remains the No. 2 athlete at the distance all-time among American high school ranks and moves into sole possession of the No. 2 time in history, ahead of Kaylin Whitney's 11.10. While Williams' effort on Saturday was at altitude -- over 5,000-feet elevation -- it was directly in line with where her coach, Ato Boldon, suspected her ability could take her at this point in the season. And her season isn't finished. A few marquee meets, including qualifiers for the Jamaican Senior team, remain ahead of the World Championships. Hill was the last -- and remains the only -- high school girl to break 11 seconds in 2015. She did so at a national meet, scoring a time of 10.98 seconds at Brooks PR. It wasn't long before Hill, currently with Asics, turned pro soon after -- well before her high school graduation -- and jumpstarted her professional career. Williams, inarguably more accomplished than Hill at the same juncture -- in 2018 she won two golds at the IAAF U20 Championships in Finland and seems primed to represent Jamaica at the senior level -- is headed toward that direction.
