Saturday - January 14, 2006- Am I lactating? Wait that's not correct… hahaha

Training: AM: Lactate threshold test!!! 1.5 miles warm up and 1.5 cool down.

TEST: Heart rate monitor on, check. Water, check. Earrings out. Check.

(you will see why)

My test started at 13.2km/hour and went up to 17.2km/hr

Each "increment" was 2,000 meters, between each 2,000, I had a 30

second "rest" where FritzBoss had to run it like a formula one car race pit stop and prick my ear, give me a towel to towel off, give me a sip of water, and then the treadmill would automatically start up again.

Ended up running 8 times 2,000 meters—oucho

After each 2,000, FritzBoss had to prick my earlobe. It is now butchered!

Then when the test was complete he pricked 5 mins after then 10 mins

after to see how fast my body got rid of the lactic acid, to put it in plain English.

*Apparently I should be a marathoner, says FritzBoss. !!! Hey, maybe! But let me get through a couple half-marathons first!

The treadmill was hooked up to a computer that ran the test so it would calculate exactly 2000 meters. (It calculates your pace per k and then just has you run 2,000 meters.) Also, the treadmill picks up your heart rate and then the computer takes data from that every 5 seconds and gives the average heart rate per minute. The computer does it all except take the blood (which Fritz does).

(For the Juniors, Astrid and Livia, they conducted the same test, but in 4 minute increments since they are younger. So instead of running each increment for 2000 meters, they ran the pace for 4 minutes…even though they could both do the 2000 meter test and have the same results! They just have a different test for the younguns, and another for an old bag like me. Hahahha.)

PM: nada, I was so beat!!

Day Mileage: 20KM, so 12.4 miles

WEEK Mileage accumulated: 66 MILES and still a long run to go tomorrow

Where: Gwatt FitnessLife Studio

WEATHER: IT'S HOT IN HERE!

Quotes: "Nice, stupid hair!" FritzBoss because my hair kept getting in the way when he tried to get blood from my ear! Hahahha

"Am I lactating yet?...wait, I mean do I have any lactic acid in my blood yet?" hahahha

Training Details: Results: The tests show that the Thuner Trio has laid an awesome foundation. We all have great bases! We are all able to maintain a quite a solid pace without any lactic acid. For me, apparently I only had a little bit of lactic acid in my blood at running about a 3:50 pace per km. (I would say that is about a 6 minute mile). However, as soon as we got up to a faster speed (3:30 per k or faster), lactic acid went up. This, of course, was expected as we have yet to do real speed work. It is all in the big plan though. When we go to Portugal we are going to do long and short speed workouts to "tweak" us. We will conduct another lactate threshold test in another 6 months to see our improvement. FritzBoss puts the results into Excel so we can see how our result curves improve from this time to the next time. The results show that I will definitely be ready to run a solid half marathon…(knocking on wood…if I stay healthy and maintain training etc…). The experience was really cool and I look forward to the next one already! The test doesn't lie, but it also doesn't measure toughness. One person could physiologically be in better shape than another, but not be as tough, and the person who "physically" should run "worse" in a race, could actually have a better finish than someone who had a better "test." (This has been proven many times…)

Anyway, all of this information will now be used to better plan our training. For example, my DL1 pace may now become faster because of my test. The goal of any distance runner is to run faster farther, farther faster (Skinnyism) and we have the tools to do that and now can use the information from the tests to specialize our training.

Also, the test could show if we were overtraining. I am not sure how this works, but FritzBoss explained one time if you can't bring your pulse up on a run and it becomes too low, then you have over-trained…Don't quote me on that, but something like that. I am going to do more research on that and ask FritzBoss more questions about it!

Sunday - January 15, 2006

Training: AM: 100 minutes with Astrid

PM: ate, slept, rested!

Day Mileage: we'll say 12 since it was SO SLOW…I couldn't go any faster!!

TOTAL WEEK Mileage accumulated: 78 miles..again??? haha

Where: The usual. On the roads!

WEATHER: Frickin freezing. IT was so cold our eyelashes froze and then our hair turned gray from our sweat freezing!!!

Training Details: Nice and slow today. Well, not nice, our legs were killing us!!!
