THE BARRIERS KEPT FALLING
On Sunday morning Sabastian Sawe ran 1:59:30 at the TCS London Marathon, a new world record. Two hours had been the mountain for as long as anyone could remember - the barrier that defined the outer limits of human endurance, the one Eliud Kipchoge chased in an unsanctioned race in Vienna seven years ago.
But, Sawe didn't just break it. He broke it by thirty seconds. Yomif Kejelcha crossed in 1:59:41 behind him. Tigst Assefa ran 2:15:41 on the same course to break the women's world record. The sport had its biggest day in a generation and the world will surely be talking about this moment for years to come.
High school track and field had its own weekend, too. At Franklin Field in Philadelphia, the Penn Relays turned 130 and delivered - Blair Bartlett ran the fastest 3000m ever by a junior, Leah Starkey broke a record set by Katelyn Tuohy, and Bullis won the 4x400 Championship of America for the first time in 19 years. Jackson Spencer dipped four minutes in the mile in Portland. Union Catholic kept building their legacy. Let's dive in.
