Trinity Wilson relishes the challenges of the Hurdles

MileSplit.us recently talked with sophomore Trinity Wilson, St. Mary's College CA, about her National Sophomore record in the 60 meter hurdles, which also happens to be a US#1 8.29.  Trinity will be competing in the 60 meter hurdles and 60 meter dash at the upcoming NSIC National Championship at the Armory in New York.

MileSplit.us:  What does it feel like to set a National sophomore record, especially at such a big meet?

Trinity Wilson:  Setting a national record at the Simplot Games is really important to me because it is my favorite track meet for indoor season. It shows me that I can become a great athlete when I put in the effort.  I always look forward to competing at Simplot.  Especially after setting the National freshman record there also. Hopefully, I will be able to do the same for the next two years following.

MileSplit.us:  You went 8.44 in the prelims, which would still be US#1.  Did you feel like you had that much more in you?

Trinity Wilson:  I felt my prelim could have been a little bit faster after finishing my race. When I was running it felt fast but I still felt there was some more in me I could've pulled out, but then I wouldn't have been able to put on a show in the final. I always like my races to have a little bit of excitement in them, so I'm able to surprise myself as well as others.

MileSplit.us:  How do you deal with the pressure of performing at a big meet?  Any superstitions or rituals you do?

Trinity Wilson:  The truth is I usually try my best and throw all the pressure away when I walk into the doors. When I show up at a meet now, I just think of myself and the hurdles. There are no rituals or superstitions that I have, just the motivation to get things done.

MileSplit.us:  Are you planning on competing at a national championship indoors?  If so, which one?  What events?

Trinity Wilson:  I plan on competing at NSIC in New York next week in the 60H and maybe the 60M. But, if you know me, you'll know I only like to perform my specialty at a track meet.  One of my focuses so far has been to do damage in the hurdles.

MileSplit.us:  When did you get your start in T&F?  Were there/or are there any other sports in your life?

Trinity Wilson:  I started track when I was eight years old and I decided to just give it a try. There was nothing that I was really commited to in my life besides this sport.  From there on its stuck to me like glue and I never wanted to depart from it. Track has become one of my best friends and I know it will never leave me.

MileSplit.us:  What do you like the most about track competition?

Trinity Wilson:  What I like the most about track competition is that it really pumps me up. To see people warming up and do all their drills, and just get ready to run excites me. It motivates me, so I can say, "I'll wam up by doing this, do a few drills, and do a little something extra to show the competition I'm ready".  Just so they can peek out the corner of their eye and think, "Oh, Trinity Nicole is here".  Just to set the tone for a good race.

MileSplit.us:  Who do you hold up as a role model to you?  Why?

Trinity Wilson:  I don't really hold anyone up in track as a role model that I can think of because when I'm at practice I focus on myself, and when I'm at a track meet I focus on my goals.  It's really all the help I get along the way, all those that encourage me to do my best are my role models.  They model to me how to encourage and inspire others.  My role model outside of track is my mom because she handles her business and gets things done - and that is exactly what I like to do on the track.

MileSplit.us:  What do you enjoy doing off the track and away from competition?

Trinity Wilson:  Off track, I just like thinking about my future and having quality time with myself, friends, and family.  Basically, outside of track, I'm still a regular teenager trying to have a bit of fun.
