2. Mims Over Quincy
Penn Relays has rolled over an extra week, with many of the Jamaican teams heading to Maryland for individual races. But like Texas, it was an Indoor star who stole the show. Quincy Wilson (Bullis, MD) was undoubtedly the athlete of the meet at Penn, splitting 43.99 for the 400m. He was also tied for the US Leader in the open 400m. Entered in the meet, he would face off against Jayden Horton-Mims (Unattached, PA), who had tied the Indoor National 300m Record, as well as Andrew Salvadon (Bayside, Va.) who had beat Wilson Indoors to set the 500m National Record. It was a race for the ages, and lived up to the billing.
Mims had only one race under his belt, a pro section of the Florida Relays. This was his HS opener, and he gave the Penn star everything he could handle. Coming off the final turn, Mims had the advantage, pushing Wilson to the inside of his lane, and the final sprint down the straight. Mims' strength would win out, and he would cross the line in a new US #1 of 45.24.
