We've had some historically great girls milers over the high school ranks.

From Mary Cain and Alexa Efraimson to Katelyn Tuohy and recent standouts like Juliette Whittaker and Sadie Engelhardt, the all-time list is full of exceptional talents.

But just how realistic is Cain's 4:28.25 national record from 2013?

The closest any girl has gotten to that mark came a year after Cain's record when Efraimson clocked a 4:32.15 at the Millrose Games, doing so in the Wanamaker mile against professionals (including the recently signed Cain, who had broken the record in the same race the year before).

A total of 15 girls have broken 4:40 indoors in the mile, but it's just Cain and Efraimson who have been under 4:35. Tuohy was the last high school girl to duck under that benchmark in 2018, though she did it outdoors, claiming a new high school national outdoor of 4:33.87.
