Millrose Games Boys Preview

The potential for the boys mile to be a very fast paced is evident in the quality of this field.  Pat Schellberg, NJ, Tom Kehl, PA, and Jim Rosa, NJ, have all run under 4:14 and look like they have more in the tank.  Schellberg won the Millrose trials race to get in the race with a nation-leading 4:12.43.  Kehl and Rosa went 1-2 at the Hispanic Games with times of 4:13.48 and 4:13.88.  Then there is Anthony Kostelac, VA, who was invited on an exemption based on his 4:10.73 last spring.  Kostelac's speed will make him a feared competitor late in the race (He ran a 1:49 split on Albemarle's 4x800 national record team).  The dark horse is Tom Mallon, PA, who is only this season learning the mile, but who also ran under 1:50 at last year's Penn Relays.  If the race stays tactical his speed could become a factor.

The Metro Boys 4x800 could be a barn-burner.  US#1 Haddonfield and US#2 Christian Brothers Academy, NJ rivals, are the top teams in this race.  Haddonfield has run 7:55.44 and CBA 7:55.51.  Bayport-Blue Point NY is ranked #11 in the country and they are followed closely by Red Bank Catholic NJ, who is ranked #12.  Abington PA is also under 8:00 at US#13.
