Who Will Come Out On Top In Another Flower Mound vs. Southlake Carroll Girls Matchup?
It came down to one crucial point to determine the winner between the Flower Mound and Southlake Carroll girls at the 6A Region 1 Championships just over a week ago.
MileSplit50 No. 4 Flower Mound came away with the advantage on Oct. 24, but that won't stop No. 5 Carroll from seeking redemption at the 6A state meet on Friday morning.
As the defending team champions from 2021, though, Flower Mound has a lot going for them.
Flower Mound has two star powers in Samantha and Nicole Humphries to lead them to a potential victory. Samantha, the regional champion, and Nicole enter as favorites for the individual title, and their junior leadership will be an important factor when it comes to accumulating team points.
But what helped Flower Mound to the narrow victory at regionals was Alexandra Fox's breakout performance, placing third with a new 5k personal best of 17:25.50 and finishing just a half-second behind Carroll's Ava Bushaw.
Fox could yet again serve as the X-factor for Flower Mound at the state championships, and a performance similar to her regional showing could put the Lady Jaguars in an excellent position for a team title.
However, don't count out the nationally-ranked Carroll girls. They finished second at the elusive Woodbridge Classic in September -- ahead of Flower Mound in sixth -- and are led by Texas 5k leader Bushaw with her best of 16:43.50. If all the pieces fall into place for Carroll, expect to see a nail-biter of a team race similar to the marquee showdown at regionals.
