St. Raphael Academy's (RI) Devan Kipyego has his eyes on a record.

But the biggest storyline entering the Eastern States Championship race on Saturday has a big question mark attached to it: Will Kipyego take down Edward Cheserek's 4K record of 11:55.40?

How big exactly is this feat?

Looking at the history books, only 11 boys have broken 12 minutes at this distance during the cross country season. Only two have done it at Van Cortlandt Park.

The most recent boy to do this was Gavin Sherry in 2020 at the Enfield at Conard meet.

While running his record-breaking time, Cheserk clocked a 4:40 mile pace, but Kipyego believes his training supports his vision. Kipeygo enters the weekend with a 4:00 flat mile personal best, which he ran over the summer.

Last year, Kipyego competed at the Manhattan College Cross Country Invitational in the Varsity B race, where he ran a 12:39.20 to win for 4K.

In his season 5K debut at the Ocean State Invitational two weeks ago, Kipyego stopped the clock at 14:57 to rewrite the record books in Goddard State Park. He eclipsed Sherry's performance of 14:58.57 from 2021.
