Quartz Hill (CA) senior Brianne Smith finished seventh at this invitational last year and crossed the finish line with a time of 17:08, her second fastest three mile run of the season.
Throughout the year, she's performed well against the runners in her home state. She finished seventh at the CIF State Cross Country Championships and 24th at the Eastbay West Regional.

In her first full season of cross country, Jie Yi Denise Chen of Claremont (CA) rose to the occasion.
Chen finished as the top sophomore at the Cool Breeze Invitational a year ago with a 17:11 performance to finish eighth. She clocked the 15th-fastest three mile sophomore time of the season on the Brookside Golf Course.
Her cross country season ended with an eighth-place finish at her first CIF Cross Country Championships.
This season, she enters the meet as one of the top returners and can challenge for the title.

One of the heavy favorites on the girls side is Peninsula's (CA) Aishling Callanan. In this three mile race last year, she put down a solid effort to finish 10th overall with a 17:21 to open up her season.
This momentum shaped up the rest of her junior season as she finished third at the CIF State Cross Country Championships with a 17:35 personal best for 5K.
When she faced national competition, she finished ninth at the Eastbay West Regional, which qualified her to compete at the Eastbay Cross Country Championships, where she finished 32nd.
She returns as one of the top runners from California this season.
