HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA -- Newbury Park made history on Saturday at the Garmin RunningLane Cross Country Championships, securing three boys under the all-time record for fastest cross country 5K performance as the Panthers secured their second straight national team championship and its second in three seasons -- in 2020, the national races were split between the NSAF Meet of Champions in Indiana and the RunningLane National Championships.
Colin Sahlman won the overall title with a mind-bending time of 14:03.29, passing the former all-time best of 14:10, which was set by Dathan Ritzenhein back in 2000. Sahlman's teammates, Leo Young and Lex Young, also went under that mark, posting remarkable performances of 14:05.07 and 14:05.49 to help the program secure the national title with 29 points.
Junior Aaron Sahlman was sixth overall with a time of 14:14.38, while Daniel Appleford finished out the scoring with a 42nd place finish in 14:44.92.
Newbury Park wasn't alone in the top five, though, as Niwot's Zane Bergen gave the trio fo Sahlman, Young and Young a run for their money in fourth with a time of 14:10.00, which also tied Ritzenhein's mark.
MileSplit50 No. 1 Riley Hough lost for the first time all season, finishing in fifth in 14:10.56. A total of 72 boys broke 15 minutes for 5K on Saturday.
The national win followed a historic performance at the CIF Division I State Championship for Newbury Park, where the Panthers scored 16 points and clocked the first four runners through the line.
