Ever wonder what athletes competing at the U.S. Olympic Trials did at the high school level? We pulled the data for athletes that qualified and declared across all events and compared them to what they did as prep athletes. Some athletes were always superstars, while some were diamonds in the rough that were lucky to even get a shot at the collegiate level.
Mitchell Black held a high school best of 1:57 and 4:38 out of Brunswick HS in Maine. Nine years later, he's down to a 1:47.43 and earned a chance to compete at the US Olympic Trials! You'll see plenty of other examples like Black that made great striders through college and at the professional level to get where they are today.
Athletes are listed in order for each event based on the mark they're entered at for the trials. We pulled the accepted entries on Tuesday, so any late entrants won't show on the next few pages.
