Throwback Thursday: Athing Mu Earns Nat. Record In The 500m

At the 2020 VA Showcase, there were many stand-out performances in the sprints.

One race that made history in particular, though, was the girls 500m when Athing Mu of Trenton TC (NJ) ran away with the victory, and a new national record.

From the start, Aaliyah Pyatt led the field for the majority of the race. Pyatt led came through in 40 seconds in the 300m. Mu then plunged through to the front and came through at 54 seconds through the 400m.

Mu started to open up the last 100m and exploded to the finish line to add over a 10m gap over the rest of the runners. Mu stopped the clock at 1:10.22 to take down Chanelle Price's previous national record by 0.08 which was set in 2008. Kayla Davis of William A. Hough (NC)  finished strong, moved up two spots and finished in 1:12.28.

At this year's VA Showcase, Davis is scheduled to compete in the 200m while Pyatt is entered in the 300m. Michaela Rose, who finished third in this race in 2020, will have an appearance in a stacked 800m field.
