After an impressive cross country season, MileSplit50's No. 25 ranked runner Rheinhardt Harrison hit the outdoor track on Saturday for the first time at the Five and Dime Athletics Meeting in Columbia, South Carolina.
The junior from Nease (FL) finished seventh in a loaded field of elite milers. His splits per lap were 1:01.46, 1:00.59, 1:01.02, and a 1:01 to bring it home. He crossed the finish line in 4:05.70 as he technically opened up his 2021 outdoor track season with the nation's fastest mile.
This is an impressive start to his outdoor season with having minimal speed training. In August, Harrison ran a personal best of 4:01.34 at the Music City Distance Carnival. It will be interesting to see what Harrison -- who will likely take a few weeks up before the buildup to spring track -- can do in a few months, especially considering he already producing one of the fastest times in the country so far this year.
Victor Palumbo of CPTC/Tracksmith won the race in 3:58.79.
As Harrison concluded his cross country season, he won his last five races, scored a FHSAA Cross Country Class 4A win and notched a national-caliber victory at the AAU X National Championships. He set a new personal best of 14:55 in the 5K at the FHSAA District 4A-2 Championship.
Harrison also won the AAU National Cross Country Championships a few weeks ago in 15:08.72 at Apalachee Regional Park. This performance is No. 8 high school boys 5K performance all-time on that course.
