Conard's Gavin Sherry won his first cross country race of the 2020 season on Saturday, taking down the championship boys section of the Northeast HS Club Cross Country Championships in Montgomery, New York, in a winning time of 15:13.7.
In previous weeks and months, Sherry ran 14:30.37 for 5K in October and went 14:43.15 in September in two independently-produced outdoor races.
But Saturday presented Sherry with his first opportunity to stack up against high school athletes on the cross country course. After cruising through the first mile with Fayetteville-Manlius' Peyton Geehrer in 4:39, Sherry held on for ensuing mile splits of 5:03 and 5:30 to take the win.
Geehrer was second overall in 15:23.7, while Wolcott's Nicholas Bendtsen was third in 15:27.0, Albany's Getachew Hayes was fourth in 15:28.3 and Exeter's Varun Oberai was fifth in 15:30.2.
A total of 13 boys broke 16 minutes on the course.
