One of the highlights from the 2019 UIL Track and Field Championships was Jayla Hollis hurdling to her first ever individual state title in the 100mH.
From lane eight, Hollis set her starting blocks while her teammate Jalaysiya Smith started in lane five. The gun went off and Smith blasted out of the blocks. Hollis had a slower reaction to the gun, but still remained focus on the 10 hurdles in her front. Smith cleared the first hurdle in the lead. As the field cleared the hurdles, Hollis slowly made ground on Smith. Smith cleared the 10th hurdle before Hollis, but Hollis had a huge lean at the end to dip in ahead of Smith, 13.40 to 13.42.
Later that year, Hollis placed second at New Balance Nationals Outdoor with a personal best of 13.37. She also won the USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in the 100mH in 2017. The Desoto (TX) graduate will continue her track career at the University of Arkansas in the fall.
