This past August, Sophia Gorriaran allowed herself to dream.
While being featuring in a 'Hometown Heroes' segment following three gold medals at the USATF Junior Olympic Games (across indoor and outdoor competitions), the 14-year-old told her local news station in Rhode Island that her next goal was qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2020.
Few teenagers her age have ever achieved that feat -- if in fact Gorriaran was to qualify, she could be the youngest ever to compete at the Trials.
Fast forward to Friday.
Just a few months later, the Moses Brown (RI) High School freshman isn't far off.
Gorriaran went 2:03.98 for 800 meters at the BU Last Chance Meet in Boston, setting a new freshman national indoor class record and posting an effort a little over a second away from the qualifying time of 2:02.50. In the process, she also tied Athing Mu for a US No. 3 mark.
