Patience often rewards athletes who put the work into this sport.
Maybe Oakdale (MD) High School Kyle Lund always knew that.
Two years ago, the Oakdale (MD) High School sophomore didn't break two minutes indoors in the 800m in his Maryland Indoor State Class 2A Championship.
A year ago, after breaking two the following outdoor season, he won first state indoor title with a time of 1:56.77. But Lund, never satisfied, always kept wanting more, and he eventually went to New Balance Nationals and broke 1:55.
On Monday, Lund, now a senior, continued his gradual rise upward, as he scored a Maryland Indoor State record and his second straight 800m Class 2A championship in a US No. 3 time of 1:52.57, buoying a strong effort that also saw him score a career best in the 1,600m in 4:19.41.

The Maryland double was his third and fourth indoor titles overall and his sixth and seventh combined championships across all seasons.
The time also marked his overall best either indoors our outdoors, and it followed an outdoor PR of 1:53.13 from April.
As MileSplit Maryland noted, Lund's finishing time was nearly three and a half seconds faster than the next closest competitor in state indoor history, though it was just five-hundredths faster than the state record of 1:52.62, which was last accomplished by Russell Hornsby in 2011 at New Balance Nationals Indoor.
Lund's efforts also weren't for naught, as his Oakdale squad also scored a state indoor team championship -- he went 48-point in the 4x400 to close out his night.
