Boys' Mile Run Preview
Josh Hoey of Bishop Shanahan will come into Sunday's mile as a very heavy favorite. The senior and Oregon signee has taken his running to a whole other level this winter, dominating every step along the way. He ran 4:07.42 to win the Millrose Games, just a few tenths off Noah Affolder's state record in the event. He'll come in fresh to the mile on Saturday and will be close to unstoppable as he opens up what should be a big state meet for him.
We'll see if Hoey goes for the state record (Affolder's 4:07.24) or the state meet record (Sam Ritz' 4:09.56), or he'll he'll leave something in the tank for later.
Liam Conway of Owen J. Roberts is also in the this field and should be strong. Conway was runner-up to Affolder in the mile at states last year. This year, Conway has had a great season that included a PR in the mile when he won at the Millrose Trials in 4:15.33 (even faster than his second place time a year ago). Taking down Hoey will be one tall task, but Conway is an experienced racer and should be himself in the mix.
Another solid competitor in this race is Noah Beveridge of Butler. The senior was runner-up at states in XC and is going after a big race in the mile before the DMR and 4x4 on Sunday. He ran 4:16.40 at the New Balance Grand Prix in Boston and, like Conway, has plenty of experience. Evan Addison of LaSalle should also be in the conversation. He was fourth a year ago, so he'll be looking to improve upon that.
Among the other strong entries are Wallenpaupack's Tyler Wirth, Butler's Brett Brady, and the Greensburg Salem duo of Mark Brown and Cameron Binda.
