The Scoop: Upsets, Star Freshmen And The Beginning Of Indoor Championships

The Patient Talent At Great Southwest

We could probably touch more on Arria Minor and Tyrese Cooper, who were the obvious the stars of Great Southwest Indoor Classic on Saturday in Albuquerque. Both sprinters won multiple events, set records and generally looked every bit as good as advertised.

But I'm interested in the potential of another quarter-miler from Louisiana as well. And my question is this: Have we just touched the surface with the talent of Zachary (LA) High sophomore Sean Burrell?

In yet another display of freak ability, Burrell continued to dabble in the 60mH as an aside to his typical duties in the 400m.

And he wasn't half bad. Burrell proved yet again his versatility by touching down for a third-place outing in the event with a time of 8.34 seconds. While that doesn't put him in the same category of the national leaders, it does prove Burrell's willingness to learn, try new things and focus.

That dexterity could potentially have longer-term effects in other races, as we saw Burrell follow in the 400m with a US No. 1 mark for sophomores and a career indoor best of 48.48 seconds, which saw him hang with Miami Gardens Xpress' Tyrese Cooper over two laps.

Still young, Burrell often has produced his best efforts when put in a position to succeed with older athletes around him. There may soon come a time, though, where Burrell begins to exert himself as a favorite in a big race from beginning to end.

When that happens, watch out.
