The Scoop: An Emerging Sprinter, Potential Hurdle Greats And All-Time Performances

4. High Flier Debuted

Clearing 7-foot is no easy task.

But York (NE) High senior Mayson Conner became the first athlete to do it in 2018, clearing 7-0.25 at the Texas A&M High School Indoor Classic on Saturday to set a new nation-best clearance.

Only five boys achieved that honor in the 2017, including returner Nathan Patterson, who went a U.S. No. 1 mark of 7-1 that same year.

The crazy thing is that Conner, a University of Nebraska signee, had never competed indoors until this weekend. His outdoor best from last year was 7-1, and he cleared 7-feet twice a year ago, though he did so in April and struggled late in the spring season to clear 6-8.75.

So Saturday was an obvious breakthrough for Conner.

The only question will be: what's his ceiling?

His 7-0.25 now sits No. 25 all-time indoors, though if he could clear 7-3 he would slip into the top 10 of all time.
