
Temecula Great Oak (Ca.) High has a chance to make a statement at the Mt. SAC Relays this weekend.
The girls and boys 4x800 relay kicks off the high school competition Friday at Mt. San Antonio College.
In two of the last three years, the Wolfpack's 4x800 relay team has run the nation's fastest time, including a meet record performance at the Mt. SAC Relays in 2015 that resulted in a time of 7:37.09.
But another California team, Bellarmine College Prep, holds the current nation-best effort of 7:45.56.
That won't last for long, though. Just two teams have broken the elusive 7:46 clip that generally dictates the cream of the crop from the rest of the country's best.
Over the last seven seasons, the race has gotten faster, with 33 teams breaking that mark in 2014, 35 doing it in 2015 and 35 accomplishing it in 2016. In four seasons previous to 2014, no more than 28 teams broke that time over a given season.
So far, this year's crop is a little behind.
