The Scoop: Sydney McLaughlin is Unstoppable

1. 'Syd The Kid' Wowed Us Again

Sydney McLaughlin didn't surprise anyone. In fact, most educated track fans believed the Union Catholic (NJ) High senior and University of Kentucky signee would break the national record in the 300m hurdles heading into Arcadia Invitational this weekend.

The numbers all but predicted it

But her performance, winning in a national record 38.90 seconds, wasn't any less remarkable. McLaughlin broke a 16-year-old record held formerly by Lashinda Demus, who went 39.98 seconds in 2001 -- and Demus later won an Olympic silver medal in the 400m hurdles in 2012.

Better yet, it was McLaughlin's first attempt at the 300m hurdles ever - since New Jersey doesn't offer the race for its year end state championship.

That makes it four national records for McLaughlin: outdoor 400m hurdles, outdoor 300m dash and indoor 400m dash.
