
Miami Southridge senior Kayla Johnson achieved something special when she ran the open 800m at the Pepsi Florida Relays on March 30 in Gainesville, Florida.
The University of Miami signee produced the fastest half-mile in over 13 years -- according to MileSplit's archives -- in the month of March by going 2:07.19.
It's easy to see, though, how much quicker the race has been getting over the past several years.
Since 2014, there have been over 10 girls nationally running faster than 2:13 in the 800m in the month of March. Before then, it was considered a tall task, with those numbers representing varying degrees of elite status in 2013 (five under 2:13), in 2012 (seven under 2:13), in 2011 (two under 2:13), and in 2010 (five under 2:13).
Perhaps training is evolving much quicker now. Or maybe the overall investment in year-round training is becoming more important, which is leading to better times earlier.
