Summer Training Blog: Micah Hewitson (Entry #3)

Entry #1 (July 17-23)

I spent most of the past week at Shippensburg XC Camp, which started Sunday and ended on Thursday. Shippensburg Camp puts a lot of focus towards injury prevention (which is ironic because I got injured while there) and race preparation.

Sunday, July 17th
8 miles, 50 minutes
After an hour drive to shippensburg university, we got into our dorms and prepared for the first run of the week. I had gotten new running shoes on Saturday and was eager to try them out. The run was on a trail called the rail trail, which is very very similar to the c&o path (long, flat, strait and boring) I ran with a group of six guys.

Monday, July 18th
6 miles, 38 minutes
The same group of 6 guys started off together. This run was 3 miles of downhill, and 3 miles going back up. During the second half of the run, three of us dropped the pace to below 6:00/mile, but the other two dropped my with a mile left in the run.

Tuesday, July 19th
8 miles, 49 minutes
Morning: 2 mile prediction run, on Monday we predicted how fast we would run two miles and those closest to their predicted times won prizes, I did not win any prizes.
Afternoon: 6 miles on the rail trail with Micheal belmagio and Isaac Davis from PA.

Wednesday, July 20th
2 miles, 14 minutes
So this was the first day I couldn't run due to my heel. I'm not sure what caused the pain, but my foot was in pain, so I tried out one of the eliptigos that were provided to the camp. I went about 8 miles on that and than attempted a painful two mile run. Afterwards I iced my foot for a long while.

Thursday, July 21th
6.5 miles, 43 minutes
After icing my foot a lot and receiving many good tips on how to prevent my foot from hurting, I felt brave enough to try the 6.5 mile run. For this run, busses take runners out to different distances along the rail trail and than we just run back to the campus. My foot still hurt a lot but I made it back to the camp as fast as I could.

Friday, July 22nd
Cross training
Not wanting to hurt my heel any more than I had, I spent the day icing it, biking and doing core.

Saturday, July 23rd
5 miles, 33 minutes
I added more support to my shoe just in case, and my foot did not hurt at all during this run.
