Six Questions Before NXN

Jon Davis

No. 4 ranked Jon Davis of Oakwood High School is undefeated this year, including wins at the Illinois State Championships, NXN Midwest Regional and Foot Locker Midwest. He became the No. 6 all-time performer at Detweiller Park in running 13:59.3 for three miles to defend his Class 1A state title.

1. What was your hardest workout this season?

My hardest workout of the season was one I did solo on October 17th. 3xmile @ 4:35 (4;31, 4:32, 4:30 w/ 3 minutes rest 1x800m @ 2:08 (2:07). The workout was at Detweiler Park.

2. What was your team's (or your own) biggest challenge this season?

My biggest challenge this season was staying healthy. I knew if I could stay healthy I could do great things in the season and post-season. I had a few minor injuries throughout the season but none of them noticeably hindered my progress. After the NXN Midwest Regional, I experienced moderate IT Band tightness which led to me spending the following week swimming to cross train. But I think the semi rest week in the pool allowed my body to recover after two hard weekends of racing (state meet & NXR).

3. How do you balance enjoying the nationals experience while still focusing on competing?

I would say it's a bit of an imbalance. I'm focused more on the race. But so far, I have really enjoyed my time here. Meeting elite athletes, exploring the Nike Campus, and hanging out with the Midwest Individual team has been awesome.

4. How do you manage peaking for the state meet vs. peaking for regionals/nationals?

I didn't peak much for the Illinois State Meet. I did slightly decrease my mileage and the intensity of the miles I did run the week of, but the main focus of my training is on performing well at these national meets. So I'd say my tapering began right after the Nike Midwest Regional, partly because of my IT Band problems.

5. If you could be a Voodoo Donut, what kind would you be and why?

I would probably be the Mexican Hot Chocolate doughnut. I don't know who would want to eat a doughnut with cayenne pepper in it, so the chances of me being eaten are very slim.

6. Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or one hundred duck-sized horses?

One hundred duck sized horses. Who doesn't like a challenge once in a awhile?
