New Balance Nationals Indoor Championship Sunday Results/Recap

Boys Quick Takes

The nation's top hurdlers in Grant Holloway (5) and Chad Zallow (4) met head-to-head for the first time and both clocked US #2 All-Time 7.59, though Holloway took the title.

  • Boys 60m Dash - Ryan Clark (Banneker, GA) and Noah Lyles (T.C. Williams, VA) ran to a nearly dead heat, 6.641 to 6.644, as Clark nabbed the slight advantage for the title. Both times are rounded to 6.65 as the new nation leader. Andrew Hudson (Steele, TX) was ranked No. 4 after the semi-final, but pulled his hamstring and did not race the finals.
  • Boys 200m - The one-lap race was another photo finish between Ryan Clark (Banneker, GA) and Noah Lyles (T.C. Williams, VA), but this time it was the Virginia junior who came away with the victory. Lyles ran US #2 All-Time 20.83 to Clark's US #3 All-Time 20.85, both defeating Trentavis Friday's 20.97 from last year. Only Xavier Carter has ever run faster, with his 20.69 time from 2004.
  • Boys 400m - Rai Benjamin (Mount Vernon, NY) took the race out in unofficial splits of 21 seconds for the opening 200m, 33 through 300m. But Taylor McLaughlin (Union Catholic, NJ) pulled away in the final straightaway to break the tape in 46.50 - literally, as the runner collided with race officials scrambling to set up the finish line tape. Upon review of the race footage, McLaughlin was disqualified for breaking from his lane too early and Benjamin was awarded the title in 46.59.
  • Boys 800m - Sophomore Brandon McGorty (Chantilly, VA) ran 1:51.50 to win the first section of the seeded 800m. The fast heat went out slow and it was Brian Bell (Dunbar, OH), who highlighted Saturday's action with a 1:49.46 anchor leg on the National High School Record-setting SMR, who pulled away to win in 1:51.08. McGorty's time would stand for runner-up honors as defending NBN Outdoor Champion Donavan Brazier (Kenowa Hills, MI) would settle for third.
  • Boys Mile - After a fall and a restart to begin the fast section, Grant Fisher (Grand Rapids, MI) took the pace out in what was clearly a sub-four minute attempt. He hit 59.2 for 400m, 1:59.7 for 800m, 2:31 for 1k, 3:03 with 400m remaining and looked to be gathering steam for a final surge as he tripped on the inside rail on the curve of the final 150m and tumbled to the ground. The crowd took a collective gasp as the Stanford commit gathered himself back to his feet with Millrose Champion James Burke and Pennsylvania State Record holder Sam Ritz approaching and blasted down the final straight in a US #3 All-Time 4:03.54. His en route 1,500m was 3:46.405, which ranks US #3 All-Time behind only Alan Webb and Edward Cheserek. Fisher took about five steps outside the rail, which is an offense worthy of a DQ but meet officials found the run legal. Burke and Ritz finished second and third, respectively, in 4:08.48 and 4:08.67.
  • Boys Two Mile - Drew Hunter (Loudon Valley, VA) led a trio of stalwart distance runners onto the All-Time list as the junior outleaned Levi Thomet and Alex Ostberg for US #6 All-Time 8:48.22 to US #7 All-Time 8:48.32 and US #8 All-Time 8:48.88.
  • Boys 60mH - US #1 60m hurdler Chad Zallow (JFK-Warren, OH) and US #1 55m hurdler Grant Holloway (Grassfield, VA) finally met for the first time in the finals. Zallow ran slightly faster than Holloway in both the prelims and semifinals. When they met in the finals, both clocked in a photo finish tied at US #2 All-Time 7.59 but Holloway was deemed the victor.
  • Boys 4x200m Relay - With US #1 Newburgh Academy (NY) out in the prelims, St. John's College (DC) assumed the role of top seed at 1:27.98. They did not run quite as fast in the finals and finished runners-up to Western Branch (VA), 1:28.17 to 1:28.58.
  • Boys 4x400m Relay - Cheltenham (PA) made up for their heartbreaking SMR loss in claiming the final national title of the championship weekend. Kyle Davis, Cordell Richardson, Christian Brissett and John Lewis split 50.05/49.33/49.68/48.32 (not necessarily in order) for a final time of 3:17.38.
  • Boys Triple Jump - Ja'Mari Ward (Cahokia, IL) followed up his Long Jump win on Saturday with a US #11 All-Time 51-7.75 mark.
  • Boys Weight Throw - Adam Kelly and Bobby Colantonio, both of Barrington, RI, swept the Weight Throw with marks of 81-5.25 and 78-0.25.
