EUGENE --- American athletes won gold, silver and bronze in the 100 meters on the evening of Day Two at IAAF World Junior Championships at Hayward FIeld.
 
Kendal Williams (Jacksonville, Florida) shot out of the blocks as he exploded to his second lifetime best of the championships, taking 100m gold in 10.21 and becoming the first Team USA man to win the event since 2004 and the fourth in World Juniors history. World Junior record-holder Trayvon Bromell completed the American medal sweep with a late charge that brought him silver in 10.28.
 
Fifteen minutes earlier, Kaylin Whitney (Clermont, Florida) pushed hard to overcome a tough start, and she fought back in the final third of the race to claim bronze in 11.45 for the first U.S. medal of the Championships. Whitney earned the 15th women’s 100m medal for Team USA in World Juniors history.Ariana Washington (Long Beach, California) was seventh in 11.64.
 
Running in the first semifinal with one of the pre-meet 110m hurdles favorites, Wilhem Belocian of France, Nick Anderson (Orlando, Florida) sealed his place in the 110mH final with an easy 13.68 behind Belocian’s 13.23. Theophile (Misana) Viltz (Long Beach, California) ran a 14.02, placing fifth in the semi and out of contention for the final.
 
In high jump, Jonathan Wells (St. Louis, Missouri) cleared 2.10m/6-10.75 on his second attempt to rank 14th overall with one miss that forced him out of the last spot in the final. Jumpers from Greece and Jamaica advanced at the same height with no misses. Landon Bartel’s second-attempt clearance at 2.05m/6-8.75 did not make the final, placing 19th overall.
 
Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio) running in the 400m, left it late in the first semifinal, charging to the front over the final 70 meters to win in 45.97, the second-fastest time overall. In the third section, Lamar Bruton-Grinnage (New Castle, Delaware) also had to make up a lot of ground, moving quickly from 120m out to snag second place and an automatic spot in the final with his 46.67.
 
On the second and final day of the decathlon, Harrison Williams (Memphis, Tennessee) made a big move up in the standings to sixth place after a javelin throw of 56.31m/184-9 in round three. Williams’ throw was more than 20 feet better than the PR decathlon mark he set at the USATF Juniors in Sacramento. Teammate Gabe Moore (Freeport, Florida) also uncorked a big throw on his first attempt with a 52.25m/171-5 effort that pushed him up to eighth-place in the point standings.
 
Needing to run 4:42.84 or faster in the final event to break the high school record in the junior decathlon, Williams made a strong move with 300 to go and continued to push down the homestretch to finish in 4:41.01 to tally 7,760 points and sixth place. That performance added 12 points to the previous record set by Gunnar Nixon in 2011. Moore finished well in 4:45.68 to complete the decathlon in eighth place with a lifetime-best score of 7,619, making him No. 3 on the high school all-time list.
 
Battling a fickle wind that wreaked havoc with the long jumpers for most of the competition, Quanesha Burks (Hartselle, Alabama) took advantage of one of the rare favorable breezes on her first attempt to record a 6.04m/19-9.75 that would be good enough to place her fifth. She matched that distance on her final effort with a headwind. Jazmin McCoy (Kansas City, Missouri) also had her best mark on her first attempt, jumping 6.01m/19-8.75 to claim sixth.
 
Heptathlete Ashlee Moore (Chandler, Arizona) made a valiant attempt to improve her PR in the final event, going out with the pack in the 800m. She held on as long as she could but finished with a 2:31.57 that still garnered enough points to set a lifetime best of 5,466 and a 13th-place finish. Moore’s score is the ninth-best ever by a high schooler. Shaina Burns, who was disqualified on Day One but competed for pride alone on Day Two, also ran hard in the first section, leading the heat through 400m in 65.89 before yielding to the pack and crossing the line at 2:26.43. Burns finished the heptathlon with 4,582 points in 21st place.
 
Hometown girl and Eugene native Maggie Schmaedick ran within a second of her lifetime best to finish 12th in the 5,000m at 16:19.01.
