Who are your team captains or leaders? Based on your finish at state, region and NXN last year, how has your team continued to work toward new goals this fall?

Most of our returning seniors are captains and they work very hard in getting our team integrated as almost a family. We have several goals for our team. One goal is to be a national caliber team, another is be the best JV we can be, a third is to find something that each individual can contribute no matter their ability.  Pretty simple.

Who are some new faces who will make an impact on your team this year? (i.e. freshmen, transfers, runners who have improved a lot)

We do not like to name kids that could break out because we have a few and it would be unfair if we miss a few.

What are some principle workouts your team does during the season?

Lots of threshold, tempo type running, along with speed development. The weight room is really important too. I think we are no different from most successful programs.

What will be the biggest reason why your team is successful this season?

We have very motivated, talented individuals that really work well together. They've be there before which is a huge advantage.

What will be the biggest obstacle or challenge facing your team this season?

Like all teams, staying healthy. They train so well we have to watch them very closely.

How has your team's culture changed in the 25 years since you began coaching at Wayzata?

We spend so much time on team building and the psychology of performance now than we used to.  It really has helped to get more out of workouts and racing.

What are your top three goals for the team this fall?

Be a team that meets all of our kids needs, continue improving in the little details you need to do in being a high performing team, and make sure that we have the right balance to the sport and life around us. This is true for coaches as well as our athletes. We get so excited for our kids that we as a staff can really get obsessive!  Ha ha
